Wordless Wednesday – A Cousin’s Baptism

Family collection.
When looking through my parents photos, I quickly recognized the location of this 1977 baptism as the basement of Saint Rose Church in Girard, Ohio. Saint Rose was where I went to elementary school; the stained glass windows in the basement stick out.
My older cousin Jake Sofranko is being held by his mom Julie, with dad Bill in the gray suit. My mom is the godmother in the blue dress.

Wordless Wednesday – The Porubsky’s

Family photo. Click to enlarge.
Dapper in their floral print, this is my great, great grandparents Carl (1885 – 1962) and Elizabeth Schulmeister (1887 – 1977) Porubsky. This photo was probably taken near their home in Topeka, Kansas. Carl was a Volga German born in Saratov, Russia who immigrated to the United States in 1901. Elizabeth was born in the United States. Her parents were likewise Volga Germans who had immigrated in 1886.

Wordless Wednesday – On the Front Stoop

From a family collection. Click to enlarge.
Standing in front of his newly built house on 607 Mansell Drive are my grandfather Chuck Lowry (left) and godfather/uncle Chuck Lowry (center, about age 3). Based on my uncle’s apparent age and other photos in the series, I imagine this photo dates to around spring of 1952. You’ll notice there is no grass in the yard. As the house was finished in the autumn of 1951, they probably waited until 1952 to plant grass.
I’m not sure who the other two people are in the photo, including the adult behind grandpa and the young girl. Perhaps a cousin? Does anyone know the name of the dog?

Wordless Wednesday: No longer on the demo list…

It’s all well and good to say that Youngstown needs to demolish more houses, and it does. Its good policy in a shrinking city. It’s hard to recognize that these were once homes. In this case, 233 West Dennick Avenue, my childhood home, met it’s fate on Tuesday courtesy of a backhoe and a Federal grant.

A few fond memories…

Wordless Wednesday: Genealogy Trips!

About 20 years ago, three generations of Wolford women made a trip to the courthouse in Coshocton, Ohio to find details of my great grandparents’ lives. No information was found, but it made for a great photo. My great grandmother Caroline Probusky Wolford, aunt Marie Witt Dockry, mom Rebecca Witt Lowry, aunt Julie Witt Sofranko and grandmother Barbara Wolford Witt Viti.

Wordless Wednesday: Sitting Around the Table

Left to right, sitting: Kathleen Rogan Groucutt (Mother Groke), Virginia Groucutt Naples, Barbara Groucutt Roberts (Babs), Kathleen Groucutt Sullivan (Booney), Jean Groucutt Lowry (my grandmother), Bob Sullivan
Left to right, standing: Noah Groucutt (Daddy Groke), Bob Schell, John Naples, Dorothy Groucutt Schell, Dave Roberts

This photo has been making the rounds with the family on Facebook. It’s my great grandparents, grandmother, her siblings and in-laws all sitting around the table in the late 1940’s. I believe the original is held by my cousin Gigi Naples.

Wordless Wednesday – So Young and In Love

Taken around 1956, my grandparents Chuck and Jean Lowry are goofing off as usual. These are two of my favorite photos of my grandparents. I never looked at the two photos together until just this morning when I realized they were wearing the same outfit and thus, these photos were most likely taken on the same day. My dad, Pat Lowry, is the kid on the porch. One of his brothers or sisters is on the other side of the screen door.
