The family consensus is that we have no idea where this photo was taken. I do think it was taken sometime around 1991 as my sister Colleen was born in 1988 and appears to be about 3 years old. Wearing her watermelon shirt, she’s pretty content hanging out with my dad.

The room was just a bit dark for this photo to properly expose, but it’s a great candid, probably taken a few seconds prior to a serious attempt at a family photo. I look at this image and think, “This was when the Lowry family was still so small!” But then I realize there are six people in this photo and that’s really a large family by today’s standards. In this image are my grandparents Jean and Chuck Lowry, and their oldest four children, my godfather Chuck Lowry, my dad Pat Lowry, my aunt Mary McCaffrey and my aunt Chris Vath. My aunt Mary is the peanut in this photo and she was born in January 1955, so I place this photo sometime that summer.

My grandparents Chuck and Jean Lowry loved to go to on vacation, and often travelled with their friends Bob and Marion McDermott. This particular vacation to sunny Miami looks just splendid, with gram in her shades drinking a beer and the McDermotts enjoying a refreshing Scotch and soda. My grandfather is the man behind the camera, blowing through 35mm film like a leaf in the wind. Gram looks up, wondering where he is going as he gets up from his chair. Bob is having a serious moment, still complaining about the waiter at dinner last night who didn’t bring the meals on time. Marion is sharing a laugh with my gram, maybe about the waiter or maybe about Bob still being frustrated with the waiter. *Click.* Photo taken.
Or at least that’s how I imagine this scene occured. I know these four had a great time whereever they went, so I have no problem inventing fun for them. They would have done it anyway.

This is a fun photo of my grandfather as an infant sitting on a blanket looking curiously at the kitten next to him. As he was born in November 1924, I believe this photo was taken in late winter/early spring 1925 based on the snowsuit-like outfit he’s wearing. If he was any older, he could double as Ralphie’s brother in ‘A Christmas Story.’

Helen Lowry was my great grand aunt, the youngest sibling of my great grandfather Charles E. Lowry. She was born in Salem, Ohio in 1906 and in 1929 married Lawrence Murphy. She lived most, if not all of her life in the Salem area and died in 1991. This photo probably dates to the early 1920s. Helen would have been in her mid to late teens.

My grandfather Chuck Lowry was home on leave from the Army in mid-June 1944. After being drafted, he completed basic training at Camp Blanding, Florida and was given approximately two weeks off before he was to report to Fort Meade, Maryland. While on leave, I believe he traveled from Youngstown to Leetonia, Ohio to visit with his grandfather and aunts Eleanor and Katherine Pepperney. I believe this photo was taken in their backyard. He reported to Fort Meade on June 30, 1944.

This is all of my first cousins except two, who were not yet born when this photo was taken. In the back are Kelly and JP Heydle, Laura Lowry, me, my sister Caroline, Michael Lowry, and Katie Lowry. On the slide are James Lowry, Sara Lowry, Jeannie and Jen Kroynovich, my sister Colleen and Kaitlyn Lowry. It took me typing this caption to realize that we are all arranged in order of age. The youngest person in this picture, Kaitlyn, is 23 years old, making this photo about 20 years old.

Someone took a quick snap of my great grandmother Margaret Pepperney Lowry as she was standing on the sidewalk. I believe this was taken in the mid-1940s. I’ll need to check with my dad where he thinks this may have been taken. I would also love to know more about the car. If you can identify the make and model, please leave a comment!

This is such a cute family moment, not too different from what Eileen and I have had recently with Brendan. It looks to me that my grandpa Chuck Lowry is about seven or eight months old and my great grandmother is trying to get him to laugh. (As I can’t see that person’s face, I’m going to assume it’s her.) Great grandpa is having a good laugh at the moment. This candid is a nice change or pace from the staged shots I have so many of.

Photo of the Day – January 18, 2015

Once again I have a mystery to solve. I know the little boy on the left is my grandfather Chuck Lowry. He was probably two or three years old at the time; the bobbed hair certainly places this photo before the summer of 1928 when my great grandparents had it cut in favor of a more traditional hairstyle for a little boy.
The mystery is in identifying the two girls in the photo. I have no idea who they might be. Obviously they are older than my grandfather. Perhaps they are neighbors or cousins? I will add them to the list of people I want to identify. The longer I do this Photo of the Day project, the longer that list grows.
